- 8th annual legislative advocacy workshop and summit big success
For the eighth year, legislators and their aides joined the Human Services Coalition and the Nonprofit Chamber of Palm Beach County, for the Legislative Summit where they received the Green Book filled with health and human services legislative priorities. They take the book to Tallahassee during the session to refer to the priorities selected through our consensus process. More than 65 health and human services organization representatives met with the delegation members and briefly provided them with overviews of the issues in six areas: Children & Youth; Disabilities; Elders; Health; Homeless/Hunger/Housing; and Substance Abuse and Mental Health.
The Human Services Coalition and Nonprofit Chamber of Palm Beach County offer every nonprofit health and human services organization and stakeholders the opportunity to be part of the legislative process. To develop the Green Book, which contains the top two priorities in six areas – Children and Youth, Disabilities, Hunger/Homelessness/Housing, Mental Health & Substance Abuse, and Elders – health and human services providers are asked to submit priorities. Later, any providers who wish to, participate in a workshop where two top priorities in each area are selected. All are compiled into the Legislative Green Book which is presented to legislators at the summit. The legislators take the books to Tallahassee and refer to them regularly during the session.
No matter how large or small your nonprofit is, you have an equal opportunity to get your needs heard. If you would like to become part of this process and haven’t been in the past, please email firstname.lastname@example.org to be added to the notification list.
Nonprofits are a major segment of the economy – the third largest employer in the United States. We bring $40 billion into our respective states. And, yet, for many years, we had no real impact on the legislative process. The Legislative Advocacy Initiative here in Palm Beach County is changing that – it gives YOU a louder voice in advocating for your organization and for your clients and legislators are listening.
